Northern lights are an amazing phenomenon and a source of great pride to the citizens of the Murmansk region. Every year thousands of tourists come to the Arctic, hoping to see multicoloured flashes in the sky.

What are northern lights?

There is a large number of scientific definitions of this process. According to the most precise one, northern lights (also called polar lights or Aurora Borealis) are “the luminescence of the uppermost levels of the atmosphere of the planets possessing magnetospheres that is caused by the mutual influence of an atmosphere and charged particles of a solar wind”. So, multicoloured flashes in the sky are the direct result of solar activity.

How often can one see northern lights in the Murmansk region?

In the Murmansk region, northern lights are seen from August (after a polar day finishes and nights get dark to a greater or lesser extent) till May (when a polar day starts and nights get very short and light). To enjoy the beautiful view, one should wait for a solar flare. The best time to search for northern lights is when the sky is clear and dark.

What kinds of polar lights can one see?

The intensity, brightness and colour of northern lights can vary. In most cases, people notice green or pale green lights. One can enjoy such lights rather frequently ― even every day. When solar flares are more powerful, solar particles get into the deeper layers of the atmosphere. In such cases the most rare and the most beautiful multicoloured lights appear. They gleam green, blue, violet, yellow and other colours of a rainbow. One should be very lucky to notice such lights.

What is the best place to watch polar lights?

If you want to see northern lights, you should go out of a town ― to the place where there is little electric lighting. There you will be able to notice even slight flares in the sky, not to mention bright lights.

What is the main secret of polar lights?

No one can guarantee that you will see northern lights during your visit to our region. Searching for polar lights is a lottery or a hunt; you cannot learn results beforehand. But there is one nuance. The main secret of finding lights is A GREAT WISH TO SEE THEM! It is the only thing that can persuade the universe to help you notice the magic flares in the sky ― to boost solar activity and to scatter clouds above you. And you will surely see this wonderful natural phenomenon.

The tour “A hunt for northern lights”

In response to the signal of our specialists, we will go to the observation platforms that are the most suitable for watching polar lights. They are located outside Murmansk (the distance is less than 50 km). During the trip you will learn everything about the nature of this amazing phenomenon, find it in the sky by yourself and even get a photo against a background of northern lights.
