In the course of ruthless wars of the 20th century, millions of people fell. What's more, some tragic traces have remained veiled. To commemorate fallen ancestors, nowadays many people tend to search for their graves. It goes without saying that one should not forget our past.

In the grounds of Eastern Europe, there are some large military cemeteries which host the remains of soldiers taking part in the Second World War. These sites to commemorate the participants of the tragic events of the 20th century are preserved both by governmental and private organizations. There are two cemeteries in Smolensk Oblast. The older one is situated in the city of Smolensk in the parkland named Krasny Bor. The other one is in Dukhovshchinsky Region.
As far as Krasny Bor is concerned, the cemetery was established in the1960s due to the efforts of descendants. After a German non-governmental organization bought this land, in 1996-1997 there was built a memorial complex comprising a monument and a flat piece of ground for mass graves. Nowadays, the cemetery is properly maintained and used for commemoration.
The second cemetery was opened in the 2000s in the town of Dukhovshchina which is 50 km to the northeast of Smolensk. The cemetery hosts the remains of over 30 thousand soldiers fallen in Smolensk, Kaluga and Bryansk Oblasts. On entering the cemetery, one can see personalized granite memorial stones. The cemetery is the largest one in the region and protected by the German War Graves Commission.
