Kronstadt (Kronslot) is Saint Petersburg’s uptown area located on Kotlin Island and a few neighboring islands. For many years Kronstadt was the sea guard and base of the Russian Baltic Fleet. It’s also interesting to note, that the construction of the world’s first ice breaker and surgical operation with narcosis took place in the town of Kronstadt. Today it’s a treasury of Russian cultural heritage. The old town of Kronstadt is mostly remarkable for its architecture that represents the most important historical events. Each tourist is deeply impressed by the extraordinary atmosphere and the amazing canals of the town. The Naval Cathedral was built in 1913 as a tribute to the memory of all perished Navy sailors. The Hagia Sophia (Church of Saint Sophia) in Constantinople is the model. The Cathedral is dedicated to Nikolaos of Myra – the sailors’ patron saint. During his lifetime it was believed that the saint’s prayers helped him to allay storms and rescue people from drowning. Nikolaos of Myra is now one of the most venerated saints. The historic fate of the Cathedral is rather tragic. In the 20’s of the last century it was devastated and closed. After being greatly damaged during World War II the Cathedral was restored and at the beginning of the 21th century re-opened to the public.
The town of Kronstadt is also famous for the Summer Garden (Letny Sad) founded in the 18th century during the reign of Peter the Great. The emperor’s house and those of his close relatives decayed and were destroyed. The main alley, however, still keeps its original appearance. This historic site is preserved by the state.
The dam protects the town from flooding and serves as a highway which is partially situated in the great undersea tunnel. Whenever passing it, one can’t help but remember fantasy movies. The dam can be considered an observation point that greets the amazing Gulf of Finland. One of the surviving forts in Kronstadt, Fort Konstantin, joins the dam.
