Saint Petersburg is world-famous for its suburbs which are remarkable for magnificent palaces, breath-taking parks, gorgeous fountains and culturally rich museums. Pavlovsk is considered one of the unique gems among plenty of other cultural treasures.
Pavlovsk Palace was given to Grand Duke Paul by his mother Catherine the Great to celebrate his firstborn. After Paul I’s enthronement the Palace became a royal residence. It was built by such famous architects as V. Brenna, Ch. Cameron, A. Voronykhin, G. Quarenghi. It took them several decades to develop an elaborate exterior design of the Palace. Together with the architects many gardeners designed the style of Pavlovsk Park.
In contrast to its sober exterior, the state rooms of Pavlovsk Palace impress visitors with decorated ceilings, mosaic parquet and incomparable collections of art objects. While travelling throughout Europe, Paul I and his wife Maria Feodorovna used to visit workshops to buy paintings, furniture, porcelain and sculpture. The interior of the Palace is also made up of numerous gifts from royalty. That’s exactly why today the Palace museum is widely-known for its amazing decorative and fine arts collections.
