Wherever people travel, nature is certain to surprise them by its fantasy and diversity. For instance, mud volcanoes are considered a creation of nature attracting thousands of visitors. There are more than 1700 such volcanoes on earth. As far as Russia goes, the biggest ones can be found on Sakhalin Island and the Taman Peninsula. Nowadays the volcanoes are referred to as National Natural Landmarks.
The Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk mud volcano is continuously active. As scientists noted, its last awakening took place at the beginning of 2011. They traced a direct correlation between the volcano awakening and an enormous natural disaster in Japan. The volcanic eruptions routinely shoot 50-meter high mud fountains. The view is amazing. Besides the geological origin, this site is also famous for its cosmic energy. It’s believed that with the mud the volcanoes drop the soul of the earth on the surroundings. To absorb its unique energy one just needs to put a hand on a flank of any volcano.
There is no vehicle road leading to the volcanoes. The walking route starts in the settlement of Klyuchi. After passing a dirt road it enters a quiet forest which from July to September is abundant in red cap and brown birch bolete mushrooms. Then the tour continues to the interesting ruins of an engineering construction site dating back to 1925 and the railway with the most rugged relief on Sakhalin Island, also known for its tunnels and bridges. The final destination of the tour - the mud volcanoes.
