Cape Velikan is a natural monument of the South-Eastern part of the Tonino-Aniva peninsula. You can't find more picturesque place in Sakhalin.
It is considered that the cape has received its name thanks to Ivan Krusenstern. The Russian explorer had been fascinated by the natural artistry and the grandeur of stone formations during the investigation on his ship "Nadezhda" off the South-Eastern coast of Sakhalin.Remarkably lofty rock formations, which steeply plunge to the sea, strike you from the first moment. You begin to imagine and guess at their shapes - is it the head of a dragon, a tiger, or maybe....? Silent and unique, as though alternating, they stand eternally in the depths of the sea of Okhotsk. The beauty of these natural landscapes is unique in any season. During winter, covered with snow caps, the rock formations seem to be snow castles, and during summer they seem to be "blankets" colored by deposits of seals. There are colonies of birds on the tops of the stone coves, niches, and caves standing directly in the sea water. From July to August the spawning run of Pacific salmon begins here. With noisy splashes of water, huge shoals of fish gather and maneuver gracefully between rocks. It is a spectacle for which not only fishermen, but also travelers from different countries await every year. Along the narrow sandy strip of coast stretch the trees of an impassable boreal forest, from which the sounds of nature are heard. It is forbidden to hunt and fish, to collect wild plants and conduct other economic activity while on the territory of this natural monument. The trip begins from the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. We pass lakes along the way. Lake Izmenchivoe is a field of sulphidic- sea therapeutic muds. And the second largest lake in Sakhalin is Tunaycha, which is home to 29 species of fish from 13 families. At the request of the client it is possible to stop for a photo shoot. After leaving the Okhotsk settlement, a part of the excursion extends along the coastal sands. There are opportunities to swim or make beautiful pictures in the summer.
