Sakhalin is the biggest island of Russia which is rich not only in gas, oil and fish but also in history and culture. Among the most remarkable places worth visiting while on Sakhalin there are the sea port town of Korsakov and the settlement of Prigorodnoye. The town was founded in 1853 by Russian navigator Nevelskoy and named Fort Muravyovsky. In history of South Sakhalin there was a period when for 3 years the fort was the Japanese administrative centre called Otomari and referred to the prefecture of Karafuto. In relation to history and culture of Sakhalin Island, Karafuto is considered the most significant stage of its development. There still remained many Japanese constructions which annually attract thousands of tourists from Asian countries.
An observation point greeting the town, bay and tail of Japanese island of Hokkaido is a must-see sight on arriving in Korsakov. The town extends over several fells; one of them holds the monument “Uprooted Families” dedicated to Korean abductees whom the Japanese used as slaves.
Outside the town the route lies within the scenic fells remarkable for some Japanese earth-and-timber emplacements leading to the settlement of Prigorodnoye known for one of the world’s biggest liquefied natural gas plants. As there is no admittance to LNG plant “Prigorodnoye” the tour includes a stop just in front of it. The final stop of the tour is a hill holding the remains of Merei Dzindzya shrine. While enjoying all these sights, a professional guide will provide some helpful information about foundation and development of South Sakhalin.
