To touch the walls of the convent and make a wish against the walls of the church tower in which Russian tsars kept their wives in seclusion including tsarevna Sophia is what one can do when in the grounds of the Novodevichy Convent that is situated almost downtown Moscow. Behind the wall of the convent there is Novodevichy Cemetery which is remarkable for numerous masterpieces of Russian sculpture represented by sculpted monuments and tombs of outstanding writers, actors, politicians and lots of other celebrities.
A professional guide will provide some helpful information about tsaritsas and boyarynas condemned to seclusion by Russian tsars and show the church tower known as Russian Wailing Wall. This very church tower is popular with thousands of people who come there to pray, plead or touch the ancient masonry.
The Novodevichy Convent also holds in its grounds a necropolis where noble persons of Rus were buried. The most ancient graves are dated back to the 16th century. One should do their best to read gravestone epitaphs inscribed in Old Slavonic as they are believed to lift the veil on dark chapters of Russian history.
The exterior of the Novodevichy Convent does not look as though something dramatic took place there. The sight greets with exquisite whitestone carvings, gilded domes, purple walls and toll of the bells. They say the convent inspires peace and calmness.
One more point of the tour is admission to the Novodevichy Cemetery. Burial in this cemetery was considered to be only available for Soviet and Russian people awarded for special services to the country. It’s a cemetery museum holding many impressive gravestones, tombs and sculpted monuments. Most of them are pieces of art created by prominent sculptors. That’s exactly why one can endlessly pore over marble and bronze monuments, full-length sculptures and sculptural compositions when in the grounds of the Novodevichy Cemetery.
